Consultation and Assessment

Consultation and Assessment

Are you worried about a child or young person you work or live with? Would you like to be clearer about their strengths and why they find might find some thing more difficult? Would you like to have a clear plan that outlines that kind of support that will help them? Would you like to have someone to help 'unstick' situations where support plans do not seem to be working?

Through consultation and/or assessment work Kathy can help you to find answers to these questions in a positive and clearly explained way. Kathy believes that each individual child and young person is uniquely valuable and that as adults we have a responsibility to ensure that they can thrive and fulfil their potential. In her work she aims to help both adults, and children themselves, develop greater understanding of their unique strengths, personal characteristics and what they find difficult.  Through this understanding Kathy will help the adults who live or work with the child plan appropriate support for the child or young person.

Work focussed on an individual, or group, of children and young people:

  • Consultation: Professional discussion about the child between the psychologist and the adult requesting the discussion lasting around one hour. During the consultation needs are discussed and clarified and support plans are jointly generated. Older children and young people may, on occasion, join the consultation (with parental permission).

  • Assessment: The psychologist carries out direct work with the child via observation and/or individual work. Age appropriate tools and resources are used to gather information. Assessment usually follows consultation with adults who know the child well, although the support plan will be generated after the assessment has taken place.

  • Written reports can be provided from both consultation and assessment work. If you need this for a specific purpose please discuss this with us when you request the work.

Consultation: Some useful information

Often the best way to understand what children need is to listen to the child and the adults that live or work with them. Through professional, focussed discussions based around behaviour, wellbeing or learning we can help develop a greater understanding of children's strengths, needs and how they are responding to their learning environment.

We will co-construct support plans based on this knowledge that really work for you and can be implemented in your setting. We find this more powerful than providing you with a list of suggestions that may, or may not, work for you.

Assessment: Some useful information

As with our consultation work we will help you create practical plans for supporting children that are based on a clear understanding of children's needs. On these occasions, as well as focussed professional discussions with adults, we will use a variety of techniques to gather more information including: observation and/or individual work with children using a range of techniques and materials.

We have extensive experience in using a variety of approaches that allow children to show their strengths and share their perspectives. We like children to be involved as much as possible in the assessment process. This leads to greater depth of understanding of the child's needs and increases the child's engagement with support.
